The bad thing about the high-resolution timer is that it only works on Windows. It also doesn't work on some old processors. There's a very interesting solution to this problem which uses Environment.TickCount if the high-resolution timer isn't available or doesn't work appropriately: http://www.gamedev.net/community/forums/topic.asp?topic_id=374327
